Spirit of Justice...naked once more...

With barely a word about it, workers at the Justice Department yesterday removed the blue drapes that have famously covered two scantily clad statues, for the past 3 1/2 years.

Spirit of Justice, with her one breast exposed and her arms raised, and the bare-chested male Majesty of Law basked in the late afternoon light of Justice's ceremonial Great Hall.

The drapes, installed in 2002 at a cost of $8,000, allowed then-Attorney General John Ashcroft to speak in the Great Hall without fear of a breast showing up behind him in television or newspaper pictures, [from the AP]

Little by little, the radial neo-conservative/fundamentalist Christian agenda of John Ashcroft is being removed...now we need to repeal the USA Patriot Act (Uniting & Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act).

Do just a little research, and you will discover that, in order to get just that angle of Blind Justice's breast over Ashcroft's right shoulder, the photographer almost has to be lying on the floor.

The photographers (and the news organizations that published such photos) were making a not-so-subtle political statement, not reporting just-the-facts-ma'am. Ashcroft (or, if you want to believe him, his subordinates) wanted to counter such distracting statements by erecting the "offending drapery."

"Tit-for-tat" as it were.

Anonymous,

Thanks for the comment. As a mater of fact, I did know that photographers had to get lower than normal to get the shot, as you can plainly see by the photo's angle.

And I agree, there might be a political statement with the angle of the photo...but with someone as far to the right (i.e. Christian Solider) as Ashcroft, coverage which is centrist appears liberal.

My problem with the drapery was that he spent $8,000 of DOJ money to cover the statues when that money could have gone for a few more working computers at the FBI to track down...I don't know...terrorists...

Finally, despite what my close friends (including my girlfriend) might say, I'm all man...not a ma'am.

Thanks again for the comment!
